A Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, is granted after one to two years of graduate-level university study that provides training in the theory and practice of business management. The MBA is basically a document that certifies that one has a general competency in all the major functional management roles you'll find in the modern corporation. Earning an MBA degree suggests something about the drive of the person that holds it. They either took 2-4 years off from their professional life to pursue higher education or they pursued it while working a full-time position. It's quite an accomplishment and earning an MBA illustrates the drive and motivation of the person that has earned it.

The MBA is essentially a generalist qualification designed to widen the student's horizon in order to take account of all the major functions of a business as well as their interactions in practice. Because its focus is general rather than specialist, the MBA is targeted at those who can make a contribution to strategy. They may have general management ambitions, but not necessarily. The MBA remains the most comprehensive and challenging management training programs, but only when it is tied to practical experience and undertaken in a real life environment. No amount of lecture theory can substitute for six months in a fast changing and dynamic organizational environment. Tie the two together and you have a recipe for success and development, both individually and organizationally.

The MBA aims to build on the foundations of work experience and, by providing new skills and knowledge, to enable the student to make the transition to a higher level of responsibility. MBA students typically will have worked a number of years after their first degree. MBA students should have an in-depth knowledge of either a function or role and a specific industry sector. The MBA does not pretend to make students experts in all of the various functions of an organization but what it does is to provide sufficient knowledge for them to understand the various facets of an organization so as to formulate successful strategies.

The MBA is popular with employers as is it is the recognized ‘currency' in the human resources marketplace. Employers know the value of the qualification and what they should be able to expect from an MBA. They also recognize the commitment shown by MBAs in investing heavily in their careers. Such candidates are likely to be dynamic self-starters who will be an asset to any organization.
